Portfolio Review (Required for Admission to Secondary Art Education GTEP)

Art majors who wish to teach art in the public schools must submit portfolios of their artwork for art department approval.

The portfolio must consist of 20 art pieces plus 8 drawings. Applicants are expected to select the best examples from their work. Anyone presenting more than 28 items total may be disqualified. Each item should indicate the date it was completed.

Please submit an official transcript at the time of the portfolio review to indicate degree, classes completed, art concentration area, and the college or art school attended.

The Art Education Portfolio Committee (composed of professors in the Department of Art) judges the level of creative accomplishment the candidate has reached in the field of concentration and in art electives. When selecting art work for the portfolio the candidate should keep in mind that the portfolio work should indicate what has been achieved, or will be achieved by graduation. Professional competence and understanding in the area of concentration in art and the capability of aesthetic judgments in choosing the best work to present to the jury is also looked at. The jury may approve the portfolio but require further art coursework and proof of competency in a specific art area.

The date of the portfolio review will be decided by the Art Education Adviser in the Department of Art after consultation with the Chair of the Department. The review must be completed during the first term of the GTEP program.
