Open to work in all visual art media. The focus of the exhibit is “reclaimed, recycled, and sustainable”. What does that mean to you? Concepts? Materials? Intention? Lifestyle? PSU and Chris Johanson are excited to see what this open ended and somewhat directed exhibit idea puts into your mind.

RALPH PUGAY RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE CENTER’S 2010 OUTSTANDING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE AWARD
Ralph Pugay of Portland, OR has been awarded the prestigious International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award for 2010. Ralph is a MFA student at Portland State University. The International Sculpture Center (ISC) established the annual “Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award” program in 1994 to recognize young sculptors and to encourage their continued commitment to the field.  It was also designed to draw attention to the sculpture programs of the participating universities, colleges and art schools.  The award program’s growing publicity resulted in a record number of participating institutions; including over 176 universities, colleges and art school sculpture programs from sixteen countries for a nominated total of 445 students. read more

PORTLAND2010
Exhibitions through May 30, 2010.  PORTLAND2010 is a biennial exhibition of contemporary work signicant to Portland’s art landscape. The work of eighteen Oregon visual and performance-based artists, including PSU faculty and alumni Pat Boas, Holly Andres, Damien Gilley, Shelby Davis, and Crystal Schenk, will be featured in part of a group show. Curated by Cris Moss, PORTLAND2010 will be presented by Disjecta and spread to satellite venues: Rocksbox, IFCC, Marylhurst Art Gym, Templeton Building, Elizabeth Leach Gallery and Alpern Gallery. Their proposed sculpture—a life-size semi-truck cab constructed out of drywall—will be on display and open to the public in early November. The project is their first artistic collaboration.

“(The semi-truck) simultaneously represents freedom and movement to us, in conjunction with dominance and waste,” Schenk said. Drywall used in the project was reclaimed from past projects.

About Crystal Schenk: A 2007 Master of Fine Arts graduate from Portland State University, Schenk won the International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award in 2006. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Switzerland, New York, Chicago, and Portland. She teaches at Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland State University, and Portland Community College.

About Shelby Davis: Originally from South Carolina, Davis is a multimedia artist who focuses on sculpture and often incorporates found materials. He has had solo shows in the Carolinas and in a variety of Portland venues, and with his collaborative arts group, PAINTALLICA!, his work has been shown at Portland’s Time-Based Arts festival, as well as in Los Angeles and Tennessee.
