Research

Jeff is currently exploring the potential of projected media to transform the built environment. In addition to collaborating on light installations in the Recess Gallery (Project) and the Autzen Gallery (Alteracion), he engaged his students in projected light experiments in the city. Jeff is working in Oregon City with the Clackamas County Arts Commission to use projected light to illuminate the historic pedestrian elevator as part of a National Endowment for the Arts grant. he is also currently serving as part of the Willamette Light Brigade, charged with illuminating Portland's bridges.

Jeff is a founding member of urbanLAB:PDX. Based in the School of Architecture, this collective is charged with exploring provocative ideas at the city scale.

Jeff has recently worked with Sergio Palleroni and the student group COSIE (Coalition of Students Interested in Ecodistricts) to develop the Shattuck Hall Ecological Learning Plaza on the Portland State University campus. The facility will feature and research a full spectrum of green wall strategies that will be accessible to the development community, design professionals and the public.

In addition to his educational and architectural endeavors, Jeff creates visual art, including encaustic, painting, collage and printmaking. Visit his studio web site at www.jeffschnabelstudio.com.
