PSU wins national awards for social media

   This year's Social Media Awards were made from reclaimed wood

Portland State University won three excellence awards - two at the 2013 Social Media Awards and another one at the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) Best of Awards - for effectively using social media to drive campus engagement with students, faculty, staff, alumni and local community around "Portland State of Mind," a community celebration of PSU. Led by social media coordinator Christian Aniciete in PSU's office of University Communications in partnership with athletics marketing director Kenny Dow, the campaign launched PSU and Viking athletics' official presence on the popular photo-sharing social network, Instagram. The campaign also involved a "Portland State of Mind" themed photo contest which garnered over 600 submissions.

 

The Social Media (SoMe) Awards is an annual awards show, co-presented by the Social Media Club of Portland, Innotech and TMMpdx, recognizing the best and brightest in digital marketing from across the country. These marketing awards are given to agencies, in-house marketing teams and freelancers for their creative and innovative uses of social media. This year's awards were held on May 16 at Fez Ballroom in Portland. Only one of two college institutions recognized, PSU received its first SoMe Awards: 

  • ET Phone Home: Best social utilization within a mobile centric campaign or application
  • Best In-House: Best social efforts within an in-house marketing team

The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) is a professional organization created by intercollegiate marketing administrators for intercollegiate marketing administrators. Initiated in 2003, the NACMA Best of Awards program honors outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions. This year's winners were recognized during NACMA's 22nd Annual Convention at the awards ceremony on June 26 in Dallas, Texas. In addition to the three other awards it received for promotion of the Viking athletics program, PSU was recognized with the following: 

  • Silver Award: Recognition in the category of Interactive/Social Media Marketing Program

These awards follow recognition from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) back in February in which PSU won eight excellence awards including a Bronze Award for the same "Portland State of Mind" Instagram social media campaign.
