For the fifth year, Portland State University’s School of Business will be hosting its annual Alumni Golf Tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013 at Landon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Oregon. Formerly the Graduate Alumni Golf Tournament, this year’s tournament will be open to undergraduate as well as graduate alumni with proceeds benefiting the School of Business Scholarship Fund.
The tournament’s dedication to scholarships aims to help alleviate the burden many students face with growing student debt. When books, supplies, room, board and other necessities are added, total cost of attendance at PSU is estimated at $23,556 for undergraduates and $44,415 for graduates. In 2013, the School of Business had nearly 400 students apply for scholarships and were able to grant awards to only 118 students, averaging $2,402 each. The current scholarship program doesn’t come close to meeting the needs of students.
As a result, a majority of PSU students carry an alarming amount of debt. For PSU seniors, student loan debt averages $26,033; for graduate students, $36,000. Some students drop out because they cannot afford to complete their degrees. Others graduate with crushing loans, postponing home purchases, families and societal contributions as they repay their loans.
Scholarships increase access to college and help students complete their degrees by directly benefiting students most in need. Here’s how you can help:
- Join us on the green on Sept. 18th.
- Join as one of our sponsors and help increase scholarship funding for business students.
- Volunteer the day of the event.
- Make a scholarship gift of your own!
