Dialogues of the Carmelites – PSU Opera

What: Based on the true story of an order of Carmelite nuns that took a vow of martyrdom during the French Revolution, the shattering final scene of Francis Poulenc’s opera has stunned audiences since it premiered in 1957. The 2012 Jeanine B. Cowles Distinguished Professor of Opera will be British stage director David Edwards. Highly regarded in the international operatic scene, Mr. Edwards also tutors regularly at the Royal Academic in London and will bring inspiration to PSU students as they prepare this powerful opera.

What: Professor Sy Adler will discuss the early history of the Oregon statewide planning program, which is covered in his newly-published book, Oregon Plans: The Marking on an Unquiet Land-Use Revolution. Adler will also discuss the dynamics of adopting and approving metropolitan Portland’s original growth boundary.
