This course entails an introduction to the contemporary issues facing South Asia. As a geographical entity, South Asia comprises of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Beginning with the colonial legacy, we will cover the historical trajectory, discussing the current trends in the region along with their political, economic and social underpinnings. We will seek to understand the notion of identity, explore its contested terrain and how it is being shaped (and redefined) by the forces of globalization. We will start off examining the major players in the region- India and Pakistan, and then move on to analyze substantive issues in the remaining five countries.
