How should I prepare for an advising session?
Reflect: Academic advising is a complex activity that brings together personal, career, and academic interests. The more you explore your own interests and goals, the better equipped you will be to assess what academic disciplines are right for you.
Review: Before you seek out an adviser for specific advice, read the Bulletin and other information on University and major requirements.
Record: You should keep the following in a personal
advising file:
- Transcripts (or grade reports) from all colleges attended
- Transfer Evaluation Report from PSU (transfer
students only)
- Copies of all petitions or forms you submit and the response you receive
- All letters and correspondence received from the
University
- Any advising worksheets or Degree Audit Reports (DARS) you have received from an adviser
Because of its complexity and importance, you should seek advising regularly to assist you in making appropriate academic decisions. It is also important to bring the records mentioned above with you whenever you meet with an adviser.
Remember: You are responsible for your academic decisions. PSU offers a wide range of resources to help you make the right decision regarding your academic pursuits, but ultimately you must decide what is best for you.
