Western Undergraduate Exchange Scholarship

Portland State University awards the WUE Scholarships to students from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Scholarship provides nonresident students with the opportunity to enroll in academic programs at Portland State that are not readily available from their home state institutions. WUE Scholarship recipients, you pay 150 percent of the university's Oregon resident tuition plus any fees that all students are required to pay. Compare that with the nearly 350 percent more you'd pay as a traditional nonresident.

WUE Scholarship Requirements

The WUE Online application does NOT substitute for the Admissions Application to Portland State University. For further information about admissions, check out Undergraduate Admissions.

  • Be a newly admitted, first-time Portland State freshman applicant with a 3.50 cumulative high school GPA. (Transfers, Quick Entry and current PSU students are not eligible to apply for the WUE Scholarship.)
  • Applicants who do not meet the 3.50 GPA requirement may also qualify with a minimum SAT score of 1200 (Critical Reading and Math combined) or an ACT composite score of 27.
  • Students must declare a participating WUE major/program on the admission and scholarship applications. The major/program should be the same on both applications.

Awarding begins December 1, 2009 and continues through March 2010. Students must complete the Early Award Application for consideration. Apply early, No applications will be accepted after February 1, 2010.

Scholarship Renewal

Students may continue to receive the WUE Scholarship based on the following criteria:

  • First-time freshmen with no college/university credits at the time of admission may renew the WUE Scholarship up to twelve terms.
  • First-time freshmen who have transfer credits from a college or university should check the chart below. The number of terms you may renew the WUE Scholarship will be based on the number of transfer credits you have at the time of admission.

  • Full-time enrollment (12 credits minimum fall, winter and spring terms)
  • Maintain a PSU cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Out-of-State Opportunity Scholarship

Freshman students from outside of Oregon and transfer students from Washington are invited to compete for the Out-of-State Opportunity Scholarship at Portland State University for the 2010-2011 academic year. This merit-based award offers students a chance to receive up to $8,000 annually in tuition remission at the University. These scholarships may be renewed for up to 12 terms at Portland State. This scholarship is awarded in the form of a PSU fee remission and does not represent a cash award. Therefore, it may not be combined with other fee remission awards.

Qualifications & Scholarships Amount/Terms

Qualifications for High School Applicants
  • Minimum 3.00 high school grade point average
  • The qualifying grade point average is based exclusively upon credit hours from accredited high schools plus any transferable college credits
  • Must be fully admissible to Portland State University as a first-time freshman with no more than 29 transfer credits
  • Note that a non-resident possessing a non-immigrant or temporary visa (e.g., B, C, D, F, J, or M) is not eligible for this award

Qualifications for Washington Transfer Students
  • Minimum 3.00 grade point average. For undergraduate transfer students, the qualifying grade point average is based exclusively upon transferable credit hours from accredited colleges or universities. All acceptable college credit hours at the time of scholarship award will be included.
  • Minimum 30 transferable college credit hours. To be eligible, transfer students must present a minimum of 30 transferable quarter credit hours or 20 transferable semester credit hours.
  • Reside in Washington state. Proof of residence for at least 90 days prior to the date of application may be requested. Note that an alien possessing a non-immigrant or temporary visa (e.g., B, C, D, F, J, or M) cannot be classified as a Washington resident.
  • Be an admitted Portland State University student at the time of scholarship application.

Washington transfer students must complete the General University Scholarship Application for consideration. The deadline to apply is February 1, 2010.

Scholarship Terms

Recipients must maintain satisfactory academic progress with successful completion of at least 12 PSU undergraduate credit hours each academic term while maintaining a minimum 2.75 GPA in order to continue to qualify for the award.

Tuition remission scholarships will be disbursed in equal amounts each fall, winter, and spring academic terms for which the recipient meets the following qualifications. The award is subject to change and the scholarship is subject to available funding from the institution.
