Financing Your Education
Let's face it: Attending college is expensive no matter where you go.
You already know that your education is one of the best investments you will make in your lifetime. You also should know that Portland State University is committed to assisting you to obtain as much available funding for your education as possible.
Last month this newsletter addressed scholarship information. Scholarships are typically only part of the financial aid picture. Federal and state financial aid is another great resource for college funding. In fact, about 70% of Portland State students receive some form of federal or state financial aid.
When you apply for financial aid, you will be considered for grants, loans, and work-study. Grants are like scholarships -- they do not need to be repaid! Once you apply for financial aid, the Portland State Office of Financial Aid will determine, based on your need and funding availability, all eligible aid options.
Grant funding doubles for Oregon students
The Oregon Legislature approved a major expansion of the Oregon Opportunity Grant Program that more than doubles the award funds to Oregon residents starting in 2008-09. To estimate your eligibility, go to www.getcollegefunds.org/SRMEstimator/
Don't delay. Your first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov and enter school code 003216 for Portland State University. The application is available now; the best financial packages often go to early applicants. Plan to submit your FAFSA before the priority filing deadline of February 1.
Visit Portland State!
Portland State hosts PSU Friday on select days in January, February, April, and May. This is a fun half-day visitation event for prospective students. You'll participate in a series of informational sessions and activities, meet PSU students and faculty and, of course, learn how to apply for admission.
