PSU's Center for Excellence in Writing Offers Freelance and Nature Writing Workshops in May
Portland State University’s Center for Excellence in Writing is now accepting applications for its May workshops "Nature Writing" and "Beginning Freelance Writing for Magazines and Newspapers." The workshops are conducted by local authors and publishing professionals. The workshops are open to the public and preregistration is required. “Nature Writing,” conducted by Amy Klauke, will teach new ways of expressing nature through writing and involves in-class exercises practicing techniques discussed. The workshop will also discuss several examples of nature writing by Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Annie Dillard and other nature writers’ unique expressions of the natural world. Amy Klauke was awarded a 2004 Oregon Literary Fellowship for her poetry. Her chapbook of nature poetry, The Wider Lens, will be published in fall 2005 by Ice River Press. She holds a master’s in Creative Writing and a master’s in Environmental Studies and has taught nature literature through the University of Oregon and poetry classes through Fishtrap in eastern Oregon. The cost for the workshop is $50.

“Beginning Freelance Writing for Magazines and Newspapers,” taught by Liz Nakazawa, is designed for beginners interested in journalistic, non-fiction article writing who want to learn how to develop ideas for feature articles for magazines and newspapers. The workshop includes several in-class exercises and will explore the process of writing query letters to editors, researching, interviewing and writing and editing final articles. Liz Nakazawa has been freelancing since 1984 and has published over 90 articles on diverse subjects such as food, gardening, education, small businesses and non-profit organizations. Her articles have appeared in The Oregonian, Oregon Business Magazine, PSU Magazine, Psychology Today, Alaska Airlines Magazine, Horizon Air and Northwest Travel Magazine. The cost for the workshop is $50.
