Dear Students,

By now, you have heard the good news that PSU and the American Association of University Professors have reached a tentative two-year contract agreement that avoids a threatened faculty strike.

This represents a milestone for Portland State, and not just because we avoided the first faculty strike in Oregon higher education. The contract terms recognize the hard work of tenured, tenure-track, fixed-term and academic professional faculty who have done an amazing job in recent years dealing with a rapidly growing institution with insufficient resources from the state. The faculty has helped PSU improve retention and graduation rates, increase funded research and engages the community in ways that have led to more private funding and greater impact.

Some students have asked if their tuition will increase to pay raises to faculty in the settlement. Your tuition will not be affected by the new contract. Tuition for undergraduate resident students will not increase in the next academic year, and tuition for most others will increase next year by just 1 percent.

I and the other members of my leadership team will work with student and faculty leaders to start a deep conversation about the future direction of PSU. I want to have an extensive dialogue about how we provide the best education possible that combines our historic missions of providing access and opportunity with being a research university and urban anchor institution.

I came here six years ago because I believed in PSU’s commitment to opportunity, excellence, and engagement.  I still do -- more than ever – and will work with you to achieve this.

Enjoy your spring term,

Wim Wiewel

President of Portland State University
