First public screening of "Mind Zone: Therapists Behind the Front Lines"
Rethinking Psychiatry Film Festival opens February 21 with “Mind Zone: Therapists Behind the Front Lines”

Rethinking Psychiatry presents Dr. Jan Haaken at the first public screening of her recently completed documentary, "Mind Zone: Therapists Behind the Front Lines." Mind Zone explores the ethical dilemmas faced by military therapists in Afghanistan in managing their competing missions of both maintaining the fighting forces and preventing psychiatric casualties.

While making Mind Zone Dr. Haaken, professor emeritus at Portland State University, clinical psychologist, and acclaimed filmmaker was embedded with U.S. troops in Afghanistan. For the first time in history, the U.S. Army granted access to a team of film makers to document the challenges of maintaining mental and emotional healing on the front lines.

The documentary moves between the battle zone and the home front as therapists working at the Veterans Administration reflect back on what could have been done to prevent combat stress conditions in theater. Mind Zone offers a rarely seen glimpse of heated debates within the field of psychology over diagnosis and treatment of combat conditions, and the limits of categories such as post-traumatic stress disorder in capturing the psychological impacts or warfare.

Mind Zone explores the controversies and challenges of keeping people in unhealthy places, of therapists as both healers and warriors. While public consciousness grows of the post-traumatic stress disorder and the alarming suicide rates among soldiers and veterans, the struggle of those attempting to diagnose and treat them has never been told. Mind Zone is their story.
